A statement of work (SOW) is a formal document that defines the scope, deliverables, timeline, and payment terms for a project or engagement.

The SOW is the contract between scope and payment. Without one, scope creep is inevitable. A good SOW includes: project objectives, specific deliverables, timeline with milestones, payment schedule, revision limits, what's out of scope, and change order process. For freelancers, even a one-page SOW is better than a verbal agreement.

A web developer's SOW: 'Build a 5-page marketing website. Deliverables: homepage, about, services, blog, contact. Timeline: 4 weeks. Payment: 50% upfront ($3,000), 50% on delivery ($3,000). Includes 2 rounds of revisions. Additional pages or revisions billed at $150/hour.'
